McEwan <9/4 favourite) led alii the way to win Australia's j richest jumping event, the £6OOO ; Grand National Steeplechase; over three miles and one furlong. and 25 fences, at Flem ington on Saturday. He won by three lengths from i Maleur <lO/11. with El Caruni I <1(/1) live lengths away third McEwan's win completed a doubl' for the owner-trainer, Mr O. Gardner, and the jockey. T. I MeGinlay. who won last year’s race with Royal Rennie. McEwan jumped to the front! I at the drst fence and was three i to Bva lengths clear throughout. McGinley described his ride as near perfect. McEwan’s time of 6in I.9see was only 3.ssec out-! side the race record. The track was heavy. Result:
