SCRAPPY GAME
11-3 Win To Linwood
LINWOOD 11: N. Stokes a try and a field goal. P. Jellyman a penalty and a conversion. NEW BRIGHTON 3: D. Cutting a penalty.
Linwood went into an early lead with an easy penalty goal kicked by p. Jelly man. Soon after N. Stokes added another three points with a neat field goal. The game was very scrappy for much of the first half with play mostly at the sidelines.
The second half began with some good mid-field attacks by both teams. Cutting opened New Brighton’s scoring with a penalty goal but missed two others which would have put his side into the lead. Towards the end, Stokes, Linwood’s first five-eighths, ran past six defenders to score close to the posts. Jellyman converted. Linwood’s forwards were well led by their captain, A. Holland, and he was ably supported by D. Eastmond and D. Couch. Had K. Wyber and G. Cron spent as much of their energy playing the ball as they did the man, Linwood would have gained a greater control of the game. The Linwood back-line played well as a unit, with F. McCormick steady at full-back New Brighton’s forwards again played well and gained much ball early in the second half, only to see it frittered away by bad handling and indiscriminating kicking by the back-line.
K. Tanner, G. Tanner and E. Leask were the best of the New Brighton team. Referee: Mr A. Guernsey.
