UNIVERSITY B 11: D. Papps and R. Somerville tries; D. P. Gaffikin a conversion and a penalty goal. SYDENHAM 6: K. Hay two tries. University B fully deserved to win a rather untidy game because of its dominance in the final 15 minutes.
Only occasional flashes of open play brightened the game between two very even sides. Although there was little to enthuse over, the crowd was gripped by the evenness of the match for the first 65 minutes. Through the work of A. C. Jolley in the line-out and C. King in the scrums, Sydenham dominated possession in the first half. The backs could do little against the University defence.
Tempted by a strong wind at their backs, W. Dowell and A.
Dunlop at five-eighths kicked too often and usually too far. K. and G. Hay and T. Bradbury outside them saw little of the bail from set play although they initiated some good moves from broken play. After half-time the superior speed of the University forwards began to have its effect. P.
