ATTACK BY U.S.
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, July 10.
American forces, pursuing an estimated 2000 Viet Cong toward the Cambodian border after tricking the enemy into a battle, reported today that they had killed 160 guerrillas.
The battle began yesterday when a United States armoured column deliberately set out as “bait” to draw the Viet Cong force out into the open.
Then, American planes, artillery and thousands of infantrymen pounced on the guerrillas, killing 160 and driving the others back into the jungle, in a pre-planned attack. The battle, near An Loc, about 40 miles north of Saigon, continued into the night, and came after a 10-day lull i nthe fighting. United States jets sank four guerrilla torpedo boats in a lightning raid on a camouflaged island base off the North Vietnamese coast, American military spokesmen said today.
