SURPRISE RESULT
Canterbury Beaten “The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. The Canterbury men's basketball team was surprisingly beaten, 42-33, by Southland at Invercargill on Saturday. Canterbury had a slight edge in the first 10 minutes but in the second quarter it was all over Southland. R. Entwistle and G. Costello drove well for the basket and when stopped they fed back to G. Wffiftams and A. Hounsell for set shots.
It was not uncommon for the Canterbury players to miss two and even three set shots but still retain possession through fine anticipation and good jumping. After the interval the Southland attack functioned better, and CosteKo found it difficult to keep track of Southland's star player, G. Hobbs. He scored 18 points and repeatedly initiated other scoring movements. He was helped by J. Wright, who tightened Southland's defence when he was shifted from centre to guard. Southland also marked better and the Canterbury players found that their crisp, fast passing did not create the same openings. Williams (12) and Hounsell (10) were the top scorers for Canterbury. Southland’s points came from Hobbs (18), R. Price (10) and Wright <6). The Canterbury second division team beat Southland Colts, 42-37, after extra time.
