MUDLARKS THE BEST TRENTHAM PROSPECTS

Ringlock And Kumai Favoured Today

Accomplished mudlarks, particularly those with good records in the type of ground characteristic of Trentham at this time of the year, will be high on the list of fancied runners in the major races on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting today.

The Cambridge-trained ’chaser, Ringlock, runner-up in the last two Wellington Steeplechases, is already a firm favourite for today’s £3300 cross-country event.

Kumai, from Wingatui, is expected to win Trentham Hurdles honours. Something exceptional will be needed from the others if they are to beat this grand winter performer on a course on which he already

record. Honours could be equally divided between north and south in the major flat races on the programme. A wide range of fancies in the Whyte Handicap is probable, but it seems almost certain that the Levin-trained sprinter-miler, Gus, will be the most popular. Manana and Time and Tide will give J. C. Tomkinson’s stable strong representation in the Stewards’ Handicap. If the result follows betting trends, the North Island sprinters will have to run hard to match the Riccarton pair. The T.A.B. double will be on the Whyte and Stewards’ Handicaps. The double for course patrons only will be run on the Mariri Steeplechase and the Woburn Hack Handicap. Hi There and Mighty Fair might be the successful combination. Heavy rain in the last two | days has thoroughly soaked; the ground. Further showers; are predicted for today, so the | going will be very heavy. Fields, with form, riders | and comment appear below. | FIRST LEG ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11 a.m.— MARIRI STEEPLES, £1000; 2im.

Min Flicka In Work

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. The smart filly, Min Flicka, has rejoined the stable of S. A. Brown, from which she did well as a youngster in the 1964-65 season. She is expected to resume racing in mid-summer. On an Australian trip last spring Min Flicka scoured so badly that veterinary surgeons despaired of being able to save her, even for the stud. She has completely thrown off the effects of the enervating complaint and looked bright at the stable on Thursday. Meanwhile, Halcyon Is progressing rapidly. It Is hoped that he will resume in midSeptember. He is a well-muscled gelding in perfect health—one likely to retrieve form quickly with a sharp sprint. Sail Away is still spelling in Palmerston North.

On Thursday Brown sent Koitiata home with an arthritic complaint. There seems little chance of his racing again.
