S NATIONAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS APPLICATIONS are Invited for awards under the National Research Fellowship Regulations. 1963. The awards may be made to University graduates, men or women, to carry out research in any branch of science in New Zealand or overseas. They are to be taken up in 1967. Preference will be given to applicants who are not older than thirty years, who hold not less than a New Zealand Master’s degree (or its equivalent), who have had not less than two years’ research experience (excluding that directed to obtaining their degrees whether at honours level or at the level of Ph.D. obtained by full time study), and who have demonstrated their ability by written work. Every applicant is required to submit a statement from his employer that he will be reemployed at the expiry of the tenure of the Fellowship. The Fellowships will each have a value of £1315 a year. The following amounts are also payable: (a) Refund of fees (except examination fee) and up to £5O a year for books, instruments, travel, etc.: or alternatively up to £lOO a year for books, instruments, s travel and fees, etc. (b) If the Fellow is married an allowance of £lOO a year. For a Fellow with one or more children, who takes up his award overseas, this allowance is increased to £2OO a year. (c) Expenses involved in the Fellow’s travelling from his home to the institution where he will undertake research, and in returning to his home. This includes return tourist class fare for travel by sea where the research is undertaken overseas. (d) If the Fellow is married two-thirds of the amount paid for his fares will be paid towards his wife’s fares. These sums are not taxable by the New Zealand Government, and so far no Fellowships have been taxed by overseas governments. The Fellowships are tenable for one year, but may be extended up to a total of three years.
