COAL ADVISORY SERVICE ASSOCIATION (Inc.) THE COAL INDUSTRY is expanding its technical service and its research and development work in coal utilisation by setting up a Coal Research Organisation in the Lower Hutt area. For this work an ultimate staff of 20-25 will be appointed—Scientists, Analytical Chemists Fuel Engineers, Chemical and Mechanical Engineer, Technical Officers and Technicians, with experience in steam engineering, appliances development, combustion, draughting, instrumentation, welding, fitting and turning. There will be increased activity also in the fuel advisory services in all the main centres. Salaries which will be according to qualifications and experience, will be based on the salary scales of Research Associations. There will be a Superannuation Fund to which an appointee’s present superannuation can be transferred if desired. It is envisaged that the research establishment will be built up over a period of two or three years but the scheme is to be initiated immediately with the appointment of two engineers or technical officers, one to work on appliance testing and development, the other to investigate materials handling problems.
