‘MUST LIMIT FAMILIES’
King’s Advice To Tongans (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 8. Tonga’s population a square mile was near that of India, and Tonga should seriously consider the introduction of family planning. King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV said in his Speech from the Throne opening the 1966 Tongan Legislative Assembly. King Taufa’ahau also spoke of the advantages of building the new wharf and tourist hotel, and plans for expanding the economy. Tonga had 340 people a square mile, India 370 and Ceylon more than 400, the King said. Tonga’s population of 76,000 was expected to rise to about 102,000 by 1976. It was obvious that serious consideration must be given to family planning. The decline of the average copra export, Tonga’s main money earner, from 20,000 tons to 6000 tons a year meant less money was being earned. As a result large families were not receiving the necessary financial support for education, clothing or their needs in the community, the King said.
