Girl Cyclist Killed
A Tokoroa girl cycling home from work was killed when struck by a car on Thursday night, the Press Association reports. She was Marion Gerrard, aged 18, of Argyle street Her sister, Doreen Gerrard, who was cycling with her, was knocked unconscious. She suffered shock but was able to go home. Car Hit House A man died instantly in a collision involving a small car and a truck towing a pre-built house at Birkenhead about 7.15 a.m. yesterday.
He was Louis William Bourquin, aged 66, of Puriri road. Beach-1 haven, the driver and sole I occupant of the car. No-one else was injured. The car was believed to be overtaking a bus when it struck the house atd went under it. Name Withheld A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a taxi in Whakatane shortly after 6 pan. on Thursday. He was taken to the Whakatane Hospital but was dead on arrival. The accident occurred in King street, near the Alexander avenue junction. The taxi was driven by L. South, of Whakatane. The police have not yet released the name of the dead [ man, who was an Irishman.
Killed By Tree A police party tramped through mud for more than six hours yesterday to recover the body of a bush contractor who was killed when a tree fell on him near Kawhia. The dead man was William Turanga (Tony) Kerr, aged 36, the son of Mr I and Mrs W. Kerr, of Kawhia. He was killed instantly about 2 p.m., and a workmate telephoned the Kawhia police. A party of six left at 3 p.m. They had to struggle in heavy rain through knee-deep mud and dense bush because vehicles could not travel on the road leading to where Mr Kerr had been working. They carried the body out on an improvised stretcher and arrived back at Kawhia at 9.30 p.m.
