Research On Insects

Drr. J. M. Hoy, director of the entomology division at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, will spend the next four weeks visiting entomological research institutions in Australia. He hopes to gain information that will be of use in planning the future research programme of his own division. New Zealand and Australia have many agricultural insect problems in common, these being mainly insects which have been accidentally introduced from abroad. Dr. Hoy will study present Australian research on such pests as grassgrub, black beetle, white fringed weevil, and the rygrass stem weevil, all of which are problems in both countries. He will discuss the recent rise in significance of the Australian soldier fly as a pasture pest This insect has become a serious problem in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region. Dr. Hoy also wants to see the research that is being done in Australia on integrated biological and chemical control of pests, and to ascertain Australian views on the use of insecticides generally.
