Chch. Roads N.Z.’s Most Dangerous

WELLINGTON, July 8.
On New Zealand roads last year, 1,039,720 vehicles, using 312.7 million gallons of petrol, killed 559 persons and injured 17,093 in 11,871 accidents.
Christchurch retained its doubtful honour as the most dangerous traffic city. According to statistics published with the annual report of the Transport Department, tabled in Parliament today, Christchurch had New Zealand’s top rate of 83 accidents a 10,000 people. Others cities.—Auckland, 66; Wellington, 60; Rotorua, 54; Hastings, 52; Invercar-
gill, 50; Takapuna, 49; Hamilton, 48; Dunedin, 43; Napier, 42; Timaru, 41; Tauranga, 40; Wanganui, 39; New Plymouth, 38; Lower Hutt, 37; Palmerston North, 36. Christchurch had 18 fatal accidents, as did Auckland. Wellington had 14, Wanganui nine, and Dunedin and Invercargill seven each.
Christchurch had 1649 persons injured in road accidents, Auckland 1342 and Wellington 1004.
