P.M. ‘Welcomes’ Argument

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 8. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today that he welcomed argument within the Cabinet and the Government and that Government members had the maximum degree of freedom to express their views. Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp., Waitakere) had asked in Parliament if recent complaints by Government members about newspaper reporting were based on an article alleging that the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) disagreed with the provisions of the Budget. “I too have opinions which are not always accepted by the majority of my colleagues,” said Mr Holyoake. “I like to see lusty and lively argument but finally there must be a concensus and I go along with the majority.”
