SERVICES FOR YOUTH

Mod. Quartet’s Venture

A quartet from the Hoon Hay Presbyterian Church, which provides special “packaged” youth services, including sermons and specially composed songs and mod. music, has invitations from churches of other denominations from as far away as Timaru.

Lead by Mr W. J. Canning, who composes the music and plays a rhythm guitar, the quartet also includes Mr Canning’s daughter, Yvonne, the narrator and preacher; Miss Dawn Shirley, a singer; and Mr John Goodwin, who plays the bass guitar. The group aims to bring the church to youth by using drama and music. It has experimented for five years with fresh approaches to music and song and has already held 30 services at Hoon Hay and in other churches. Each service is based on a central theme such as “God The Creator,” and prayers and music are then set to match the theme. “Who Is A Christian?” will be the theme of the evening service on Sunday, when four of Mr Canning’s songs will be used. A major part of the service will be a discussion on the theme.
