AIR MAILS HEAVIER

Effect Of U.K. Strike (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 28. Air-mail letters from Britain and Europe have increased by more than 62 per cent since the start of the seamen’s strike. From June 1 to June 27 last year, 755 letter bags and 199 parcel bags were received from Britain and Europe. In the same 27-day period this year, 1190 letter bags and 327 parcel bags were received by air mail, post office officials said yesterday.

Tomorrow, the Lavaux arrives in Wellington with 5000 bags of mail from Britain and Europe. The Lavaux was the last regular sailing from Britain on the direct route to New Zealand before the strike. Mail for New Zealand is being loaded at Southampton in the Ellinis, which will arrive in Wellington on August 10. The Ellinis has a Greek crew and is not affected by the strike. Post office officials have been told that mail after this would be routed via Australia. This could cause a slight delay.
