ESCAPED TO AUSTRIA
Czech, Bride Safe (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright/ KLAGENFURT (Austria). _ June 27. A 29-year-old Czech, who dragged himself across the Iron Curtain after being stabbed by a border guard, will probably be granted asylum, with his young bride, Austrian Government officials said today, United Press International reported. Georg Benda was wounded three times by the bayonet of the Jugoslav guard as he and his bride, Zdena, aged 20, escaped through the woods to Austria early on Friday.
Benda and his wife, both from Prague, were on their honeymoon in Bled, in northern Jugoslavia, when they decided to escape. At the border they were confronted by two armed guards. Benda said he and his bride were Austrian tourists who had strayed across the border. One of the guards went to call an officer.
Suddenly Zdena broke for the border. The guard lifted his rifle and Benda went for him. In the scuffle he was wounded in the neck, shoulder and abdomen by the bayonet. He feigned unconscousness and the guard ran for help. Benda ran, crawled and finally dragged himself over the border to where his bride was waiting.
