before the £lO,OOO Epsom Handicap, one mile, in October. Chantal raced in Australia as a two and three-year-old and was unplaced only twice there. She won the Rothsay Handicap over a mile at Flemington as a two-year-old and was second in her only other start that season. At three she won the Elsternwick Handicap over seven furlongs at Caulfield and the Essendon Handicap over a mile at Flemington. She was also placed in the Edward Manifold Stakes, Thousand Guineas, Wakeful Stakes, and the Oaks, each time behind the Melbourne Cup winner, Light Fingers.
