Washing Woollens

Blankets could be quite safely washed in a wasMng machine, but it was still necessary to take care to ensure their long life. Miss Joan Young education officer for the Wool Board, said recently. Heavily soiled blankets should be soaked in cold water before washing. Blankets should be put into the soapy water singly and should noti be left in the machine for more than three minutes. They should be hung on a line with the satin edge facing down and when dry should be brushed with a suede' brush. If these simple rules were followed, blankets would out-, last their 20-year guarantee, said Miss Young. There was also a simple set of rules to guard against yellowing in woollen garments. she said. Using water that was too hot or drying in bright sunlight were the most common causes of discoloration. Water should be tested with the elbow. WasMng powders or washing soda were quite unsuitable.

Some sodium perborate, a bleach which could be used safely and effectively with wool, could be obtained cheaply from any chemist.
