ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Wether Values Show Marked Increase
With a limited entry, and some outside buying competition, fat wether values showed marked improvement at Addington Market yesterday. ,
Fat ewes, which had shown a slight easing last week, rose by 2s a head, with the top pens selling to 70s Id. Fat lambs met a fairly steady sale, with the best entry firming by 2s a head.
In a short yarding, fat cattle rose by 30s a head. Store cattle values were fully firm, with the exception of cows, which were well below the earlier buoyant autumn rates.
Store Sheep With quality taken into account, store sheep values were about on a par with last sale. The store lamb entry was the smallest of the year, and with one or two exceptions, quality was very plain. Shorn Romney I lambs predominated. i Although a fair gallery fol- • lowed the adult sheep sale, there was not a lot of strength in the market. Most of the ewes were a plain selection, and values could be quoted as about firm on last sale. The store lamb entry dropped from 1700 last week to 1650, while the adult sheep entry totalled 1138, compared with 895. The lamb offering comprised 12 pens of wethers and four pens of ewes. It was a typical mid-winter offering, and top . price in the wether lamb entry was 58s for a pen of Romneys ; in the wool. Shorn Romneys sold ifrom 52s 6d to 57s 6d for the best, with the remainder selling from 40s to 50s. One pen of Down cross lambs realised 555. Two pens of shorn Romney ewe lambs sold from 61s 6d to 655. a pen of Perendales from the Peninsula sold at 60s, while the only pen of Corriedales (in the wool) realised 79s 6d. I The adult sheep entry comI prised 12 pens of ewes, a pen of two-tooths, and two pens of wethers Top price of the day was 70s for the top pen of a • draft of four and five-year-old I halfbred ewes, mated to half'bred rams, from a high country
property in the Lewis Pass. Sound-mouthed Romneys sold to 675, and Corriedales of the same ' description to 67s 6d. There ■ were other sales of one-year ewes from 53s to 595. ! A pen of 70 mated Romney , two-tooth ewes realised £5 3s, , and two-tooth halfbred wethers sold to 58s 6d. Quotable sales included: — J. J. Minehan (Glenhope), 134 • four and five-year-old mated • halfbreds at 70s; W. O. Clay- ; ton (Teddington), 70 Romney ' two-tooth ewes at £5 3s. 1 Fat Lambs
The fat lamb entry fell from 2076 last week to 1588, at which it was the smallest for a considerable time. Quality was not as good as usual, there being quite a percentage of plain sorts. There was onily a small selection of two-tooths and most of these were shorn. In contrast with sales over the last three months, the sale was a very strong one, with values rising 4s to 5s a head, and in some cases more. However, the tallowy type of wether dild not share the same inquiry. Values for over-prime wethers were about 2s firmer than last sale. Tn common with the wether sale, fat ewes met a strong market last week's slight easing being quickly recovered. Values, all over, appeared to be 2s or so stronger, with top price being 70s Id. The entry was 1676, compared with 2570

There were 10 to 12 pens of calves, the same number of breeding cows, and a few pens of young steers. The out-of-Season offering of calves met a very steady sale, with Aberdeen Angus steers selling to £27 13s fid and heifers to £24 18s fid. Good, medium and heavy porkers met keen competition, but unfinished and
over-fat pigs were again hard to sell. A number of Tamworth cross porkers were yarded, but because of grading requirements they met very restricted demand.
