Coach To Have Operation
CN.Z. Press Association) NELSON. At a vitally important stage of their tour, the British Lions will be without their assistant manager and coach, Mr J. D. Robins. It was announced yesterday morning that Mr Robins, who injured an achilles tendon while refereeing a charity match at Wellington on Saturday, will go into Wellington Hospital today for an operation. It is expected that he will be away from the team for two weeks. This is most unfortunate that the Lions, already buffeted by injuries to players and a series of defeats, should lose their coach at the time when they have to meet three of the strongest provinces in
New Zealand —Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, and Northland — and also begin their preparations for the first test at Dunedin, on July 16. The manager (Mr D. J. O’Brien) said that he would not be undertaking training. “That might be disastrous,” he added. He said that the captain, M. J. K. Campbell-Lamerton, would take over training the team in the period while Mr Robins was incapacitated.
Hissed Record.—The AusiraHan, R. Clarke, won a 3000 metres race at O«’’.o on Monday in 7min 58sec, well outside the world record of 7min 39,ftsec held by K. Keino (Kenya). Getting Ready.— The North Shore squash racquets club had spent between £llOO bringing its courts and grounds up to the required national standard for the North Island championships at the end of this month.
