NURSE TO RESCUE
West Indies Recover (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SOUTHEND. S. M. Nurse rescued the West Indians yesterday after they had lost three wickets for 57 runs in reply to the Essex total of 230 on the second day of their three-day match at Southend. With fine strokes all round the wicket, Nurse completed his half-century in 110 minutes and was undefeated at the close with 60, when the touring team was 104 runs behind at 126 for three. The West Indies lost M. C. Carew with only four scored, and C. C. Hunte at 22, both caught by the wicket-keeper. B Taylor. R. B. Kanhai and Nurse moved the score along to 57, before Kanhai was brilliantly caught in the gully by Knight. In the morning Essex, resuming at 218 for eight, held up the West Indians for half an hour. T. E. Bailey, after a monumental stay of more than four hours and a half, scored an undefeated 43. W. W. Hall returned his best figures in first-class matches on the tour, four for 63.
