Soccer Team Had 7 On Rescue Work
Because seven of its team were engaged on rescue work at Arthur’s Pass, the Burnham second division soccer team defaulted its game last Saturday.
The Canterbury Football Association’s management committee was told this last evening when considering the club’s fifth default of the season.
The Burnham club said by letter that the soldiers were told on Friday afternoon they would be free to play on Saturday. However, on Saturday they
were placed on stand-by when the final bid was made to reach the stranded climbers and the club was left with only five players at the game against University. In view of the special circumstances, the committee accepted the explanation. The committee approved a £5 5s contribution to the John Harrison Memorial iFund. Mr Harrison was the climber killed in the rescue.
