HEATHCOTE RIVER
Concern At Levels High tides in the Heathcote river below the Radley bridge at Richardson and Clarendon terraces were getting up to and above bank levels, said Mr J. B. Davidson at a meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. “I don’t think these are spring or neap tides,” he said, “and by the time the spring tides start we are going to be in serious trouble in that area.”
Mr Davidson said there had been no dredging of the river below the Radley bridge since 1958, and he believed the height of tides had increased considerably. He asked whether silting in the lower reaches of the Heathcote could have affected high-tide levels, and whether any record was kept of tide levels there. Mr P. J. McWilliam, the board’s chief engineer, said silting would have little effect on high-tide levels, but it could affect low-tide levels. No recent records had been kept, and levels would have to be measured over a long period for any change to be noticed.
