Snow On West Coast Routes

Snow again disrupted traffic on the Arthur's Pass, Lewis Pass and Haast pass routes yesterday, and the Automobile Association (Canterbury) advised last evening that it was essential for all motorists using these roads to carry chains. Ministry of Works graders cleared snow from the road at Otira and on the Arthur’s Pass summit during the morning. Rain later caused slippery, slushy conditions. Overnight falls of snow were also cleared around the Lewis Pass summit. There were intermittent falls all day, however, and they became heavy late in the afternoon.

The Haast Pass route was closed for a period early in the day because of snow at the narrow section of the roadway known as the “hinge,” between the Haast bridge and the summit. Fallen trees across the road had to be removed before graders could get to work. It was most unusual to get snow at this part of the Haast route, which was 1700 ft above sea level, the Automobile Association said.
