ENTRANCE TO NAVY
Six Schoolboys Sit Exam. Six senior schoolboys yesterday sat the annual preentry examination for those seeking permanent commissions in the Royal New Zealand Navy. According to the naval recruiter (Chief Signalman R. Lasseter) the number was about average. ‘The standards are very high, and it is a very selective way of joining the Navy. Mind you, boys can always come along and give it a go,” he said. Those successful will be called before a selection board at H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel during the August school holidays. Normally the Dominion total averages 20 boys, of whom only three or four are selected for permanent commissions.
Chief Signalman Lasseter said the boys now sitting the pre-entry examinations would, if successful at the August selection board meetings, enter the Navy in January as officer cadets. Chief Signalman Lasseter will recruit officers and ratings on the West Coast next week. Later, he will visit Otago and Southland.
