Woman Gains Success As League Coach

AT a time when Rugby League coaching in Canterbury has come in for some criticism it is intriguing to find that possibly the most successful coach during the last two years has been a woman. Mrs L. Lightfoot, the wife of a leading referee and schoolboys’ administrator, last year won the distinction of being the first Halswell club coach to lead a team to a championship win. That was with the undereight grade team. This season the same team recently won the under-nine grade. In the two years young-

sters have played 25 matches and have lost only one. Two have been drawn and 22 won. This season the team is unbeaten in its 10 matches. Last year the team also won the knock-out and the Stan Dennis Cup for the team scoring most points and having the fewest scored against in all schoolboy grades. In its 25 matches Halswell has scored 324 points and conceded only 12. Mrs Lightfoot’s son, Tommy, captained the Canterbury under-eight team last year and scored 34 tries in the season. This year he has added a further 10.
