Butterfly Champion Retires
'THE Empire Games prospects of the New Zealand men’s butterfly champion, D. F. Gerrard, have brightened considerably with the news that K. Berry, Australia’s world champion, has decided to retire.
Berry made the decision in Sydney recently after flying home from the United States for his father’s funeral. In future he will swim only for his university; he feels bound to do this as he won his scholarship through his ability in the sport.
Berry was on the threshold of a great career when he visited Auckland in 1961 and set all-comers’ records for 110 yd and 220 yd butterfly. He accomplished 12 world record-breaking swims in his career and his world marks for 220 yd and 200 metres still stand.
Perhaps his greatest triumph was his victory in the 1964 Olympic Games, when he beat off a strong American challenge in his specialist stroke.
