Courageous Player
Southland badminton players did not have a very successful day in their matches against Canterbury teams recently, but one of the visitors. Miss G. Dowling, earned the unstinted admiration of her opponents for the courage and skill she showed in junior (un-der-19) matches. Miss Dowling was bom without a left hand but has persevered at badminton with the encouragement and coaching of Mr P. D. Skelt, a former New Zealand
champion and present national selector. Tossing the shuttle in the air for the service has always been difficult for Miss Dowling but she has risen above her disability and become the leading junior girl player in her province. Recently she was fitted with an artificial hand and has made further progress. At the Skellerup Hall she beat the Canterbury No. 1 girt. Miss N. Oliver, in three sets*.,
