RACE GUIDE DESTROYED

Race Guide, which broke down during the running of the Hinds Hack Hurdles at Ashburton on Saturday, was destroyed on Saturday evening.

“There was no chance of saving him,” said his Heathcote trainer, J. Grey, who raced the seven-year-old King’s Command gelding in partnership with Mr T. H. Moore. “Beside the leg which gave out he was also suffering from a back injury.”

Until this season Race Guide had done his racing for Mr N. A. Syme, of Christchurch. In his colours he won six races and £1355 in stakes.

Race Guide has only recently been switched to hurdling. Before Saturday’s race he had been placed over hurdles at Amberley and Waimate.

Misses Races For Basketball “The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The top jockey, G. F. Hughes, emerged from the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting with four winning rides and a second from five mounts. But although delighted with his day’s work, Hughes said his biggest thrill nowadays was provided by his daughters, who spent much of their leisure time on the basketball court. “I sometimes miss the races to see the girls play,” Hughes said, “and I get a bigger thrill from their success than they do themselves.”
