Approach To Govt. On Sewage Plant

(New Zealand Press Association ‘ HAMILTON. June 27. The Hamilton City Council and the New Zealand Dairy Company would “more than likely” make a joint approach to the Government in an attempt to solve the sewage treatment plant controversy, the company’s chairman of directors (Mr F. L. Onion) said today.

“In fairness to the arrangement we have with the counIcil I feel we must persevere with current negotiations for a period,” said Mr Onion, i “But we can't go on indefinitely.” ■ Asked what he meant by . the phrase “for a period”, Mr (Onion said it was hoped that I “progress or otherwise"

would have been made with in a month. He felt the dispute would “ultimately go back on Mr Holyoake's desk." It was at the Prime Minister's instigation that representatives of the council and the dairy company agreed to meet. Two meetings have been held and a third is planned. Mr Onion said he was not happy with the type of sewage treatment plant proposed in view of his inspection of similar plants in Britain and America during his recent ! overseas tour. ; He would not elaborate beyond saying “a treatment plant Is only as good as the men behind it.” Mr Onion said the dairy company had in no way changed its attitude to the proposal to build the sewage treatment plant near to the new milk factory at Te Rapa. “The company will not agree to the siting of the treatment plant on the Pukete road site,” he said.
