(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copt/riphti PRETORIA. The lives of 55 people who had “died” under anaesthetic on hospital operating tables were saved between 1956 and 1963 by South African surgeons using heart massage. “Scientia,” official journal of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, said that between 1956 and 1963, 1042 people died under anaesthesia. Cardiac massage was attempted in 530 cases and 55 recovered. A statistical analysis in the report showed that the death rate associated with anaesthesia and surgery in South African public hospitals was declining.
