Obituary

MR T. H. OATES (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 27. The death has occurred in Wellington of Mr T. H. Oates, owner of the first cycle business in New Zealand. Mr Oates and his father opened their business in Christchurch in the late 1890 s, dealing firstly in penny-far-thing bicycles. Bom in Cornwall, Mr Oates came to New Zealand as a boy in the 1880 s. From 1898 to 1904 he was New Zealand amateur cycling champion. He also competed in the first Timaru to Christchurch race. From 1912 until a few years ago he had a cycle business in Wellington. Mr Oates was an administrator of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, which formerly included the cycling association. He is survived by three daughters.
