NORTH SEA DRAMA
Trawler Crew Terrorised (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TYNEMOUTH, (England), June 26. A deranged sailor locked himself in the engine-room of a 138-ton British trawler today, and terrorised his mates for several hours, threatening to blow up the ship. United Press International reported. The drama occurred in the North Sea about 78 miles off Tynemouth. The man eventually gave himself up to the skipper. The unidentified man kept working the throttle and directional control up and down, sending the trawler Wilson Line zig-zagging backwards and forwards. The rest of the crew was helpless to stop him. The seaman threatened to blow up the ship's fuel tanks but gave no reason for his actions. After several hours the Wilson Line’s chief engineer managed to climb on top of the engine through a skylight and cut off the fuel supply. When the man realised the engine had stopped he came out of the engine-room and the skipper locked him in the galley.
The sailor was later transferred to a Swedish ferry bound for Gothenburg, Sweden.
