Patrol Joins Tour To Curb Incidents
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) ANGERS. Tour de France organisers, determined to clamp down on the many incidents of foul play which marked the sixth stage on Sunday, are keeping a stern watch over the cyclists on the 151.5-mile lap from Angers to Royan.
After jersey-pulling and punching incidents which made Sunday’s 134-mile ride to Angers from Caen one of the roughest finishes in the history of the race, the organisers last night issued a statement:— “In view of the repeated offences committed during
the stages and at the finish, the race jury has decided to take strong action against all irregularities. A motor-cycle inspector is being assigned to keep a permanent watch when the riders are grouped.” In the sixth stage a Dutchman, Henk Nijdam, was relegated to 120th place and penalised 30 seconds for irregular riding after he crossed second over the finishing line. Another Dutchman, Jo de Roo, was penalised five minutes for Mtting another rider. The stage was won by a Belgian, Eduard Seis, with the rest of the field massed in a right group behind him. R. Altig, 29-year-old West German, kept the yellow jersey of race leader wMch he captured on the opening day of the three-week tour last Tuesday. Over-all, he is 36 seconds ahead of the six riders who share second place.
