LIONS NOT SETTLED ON MID-WEEK TEAM

(From I. J. D. HALL) NELSON. Although only three of the team beaten convincingly by Wellington have been chosen in the team to play Nelson’s Golden Bay-Motueka-Marlborough combined tomorrow, it is not really an indication that the Lions have settled on a Saturday and Wednesday team.

The selection of the Wellington match was dictated to a certain extent by injuries and in this game several players who have been injured are being given their first game for some time.

The Welsh wing, S. J. Watkins, will have his first game in New Zealand, S. Wilson and K. F. Savage their second, while D. Watkins, R. McLoughlin, S. J. Wilson and

M. P. Weston and N. A. A Murphy, who have had minor injuries recently, have also been selected. The team is:—S. Wilson, S. J. Watkins, M. P. Weston, C. W. McFadyean, K. F. Savage, D. Watkins, A. R. Lewis T. W. Telfer, N. A. A. Murphy, M. J. Campbell-Lamerton (captain), W. D. Thomas, D. Grant, R. L. McLoughlin, F. A L. Laidlaw, D. L. Powell. Line-out Work Three players R. A Lamont, K. Kennedy and B. Price were not considered because of injury. As expected the

main emphasis at the Lions training yesterday was on line-out work, and the captain, Campbell-Lamerton, drilled his pack for a long time. Particular attention was paid to protecting the man jumping for the ball and now that the Lions have realised that it is not the man who jumps highest, but the man best protected who gains possession, their line-outs might become tighter, something which will reflect in their back play. The backs played touch Rugby for quite a long time and here again there was an emphasis on fundamentals. There was a constant exhortation for players not to drop the ball. This they mainly managed to avoid. D. Watkins, still looking rather peaky after his attack of influenza, was not quite as perky as usual at training, but the others all showed some zest and the chofcen back-line moved quite smoothly.
