VEHICLE REPAIRS
Trade Says Too Cheap Motorists should have to pay more for repairs and maintenance to their vehicles, Mr E. C. Morrin, the retiring president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association, told the annual meeting last evening. Mr Morrin compared the costs of maintaining a car to television set repairs. Not only was the hourly rate much higher, but television technicians were less skilled than motor mechanics. He claimed that he could produce cost sheets to substantiate this. “I do not deny television repair men their right to charge such high costs,” he said. “In fact, I say good luck to them.” Mr Morrin said that because the charge rate was low, employers could not afford to pay mechanics competitive wages and they were lost to more lucrative industries. He suggested that something be done about the situation very soon.
