Winfreux scored by threequarters of a length from Brandy Lad. The New Zealander. Apa. and Oxford King dead-heated for third, three lengths away. The Queensland horse, Prunda carried lost to win the Eagle Farm Welter. He will drop to Bst lib In the cup.
Prunda held off a late challenge from Hamonfse to win by a long head. Fire Box was three-quarters of a length away third.
Although the Sydney sprinter. Time and Tide, was defeated In the W. J. Healey Stakes (sis furlongs) his run returned him to calculation for nett Saturday's Doomben Ten Thousand. Boom Gate ran a race record to beat Time and Tide by a length, with the Victorian. Pterylaw. a length away third. Time for the race was imin 10 3-ssae—l-ssec better than the record set last year by the dead-heaters, L’Orage Boy and Miss Proud. Boom Gate Is unlikely to get a run In the Ten Thousand. Only 20 horses may start, and Boom Gate, with 7st, may be among the first balloted out. The Sydney two-year-old, Nebo Road, has been backed to win a fortune In the Ten Thousand As a result of the plunge, Nebo Road Is now second favourite with Maritana. Citlus remains the favourite.
