Twins Account For Six St. Andrew’s Tries

Superior backs enabled St. Andrew’s College to beat Shirley Boys’ High School, 25-13, in a fast-moving game at St. Andrew’s on Saturday. The Moore twins, on the wings for St. Andrew’s, scored six of their side’s seven tries with hard, straight running. R. Moore, on the left wing, not only scored tries but performed every other task so well that he was the dominant figure of the match. The teams were: — Shirley Boys’ High School.—

B. Hanham; J. Doyle, R. Hudson, B. Hancox: S. Mitchell, I. Whitehead; P. Baker (vice-cap-tain); B. Yeatman, P. Gass, S. Miles, D. Thorburn, G. Lodge (captain); G. Breeze, G. Walker, H. Anderson. St. Andrew’s College.—l. Wright; R. Moore, W. Steel (captain), M. Moore; N. Bary, M. McEwan; M. Fisher; G. King; L. Murdoch, J. Morris, B. McIntosh, H. Ruffel; T. McElrea, L. Jeffs (vice-captain), A. Ferguson.

The play- of the St. Andrew’s backs was not without blemish and the centres were well contained by their opposites. But their handling, passing and variation of play were sufficient to give their two fast wings the opportunities to score tries. The half-back, Fisher, played a vital role with swift and accurate passing, and the fullback, Wright, ran and passed intelligently whan he entered the back-line. Whitehead was the pick of the Shirley backs and scored a well deserved try by side-stepping past a group of defenders. His covering work was first class. Baker was a neat half-back who served his backs well, but the centres were unable to penetrate in their orthodox attacking movements.

In two evenly matched packs, Ruffel, Morris and King were particularly prominent for St. Andrew’s. In th* Shirley pack Thorburn won much clean ball in the line-outs and Breeze was perhaps the outstanding forward of the match, giving a fine display in the tight and being active in the loose. For St. Andrew's, R. Moore (3), M. Moore (3) and Ruffel scored tries and Ruffel converted two. Whitehead and Doyle scored tries for Shirley and Miles kicked a penalty goal and two conversions. Referee: Mr R. H. Bull.
