Chieftainship Conferred
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 26. An 18-year-old Post Office employee was made a Samoan chief at a twohour ceremony in Grey Lynn on Saturday morning. He is Lea’apua Siaosi Auelua. He received the title held by his grandfather, Chief Auelua. Dressed in lavalavas,
nine chiefs of the Samoan community in Auckland sat cross-legged around a room in a house in Leighton street for the ceremony. The opening oration was made by Chief Orator Faieauto Sei, who gave the traditional blessing. Faieauto Sei then distributed symbolic sticks to high ranking chiefs
in order of seniority—the longer the stick the higher the rank.
Each chief then drank from the kava bowl and spoke briefly before the bowl was passed to I>ea’apua Siaosi, who by the act of drinking became the new Chief Aueiua. Finally the customary distribution of gifts was made by the retiring chief.
