NEW CYCLING SELECTORS
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, The New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association’s annual meeting on Saturday elected a completely new three-man national selection panel in a move that showed the reception of the existing panel’s selections for the Jamaica Empire and Commonwealth Games.
The new selectors are Messrs D. B. Smith (Wellington), the convenor, L. E. Tall (Southland), and J. W. Partridge (Auckland). The Canterbury nominee, Mr B. E. Dawe, was among the unsuccessful candidates.
Another unfortunate aspect for the Canterbury centre was the rejection of Mr H. C. Poore as a life member of the association. Nominations for this high position require three-quarters of the votes but are rarely lost. Mr G. W. Clark (Canterbury) was, however, reelected as one of the five vicepresidents and Mr E. W. Scott (New Plymouth) will manage the New Zealand team to Australia later this year. The Canterbury centre will be the hosts for the first New Zealand 100 kilometres teams time trial championship in September next. Each centre is eligible to enter one team and any other four-man combination that has recorded 2hrs 35mins.
The New Zealand grass track championships will in future be alternated between Canterbury and Wellington. The Canterbury delegates expressed the view that Greymouth would be a possible venue for the 1968 meeting, with the 1967 events being staged in Masterton. Dispensation Given The other most contentious matter under discussion was the national road calendar. It was agreed that in future the
existing rules which specify that the national championships should be held in December will be adhered to, but as a special dispensation the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay centre will be allowed to stage the 1966 championships on the first week-end in October. The delegates from this centre had earlier stated that unless the October date were adhered to this year, the centre would not stage the fixture.
President Re-elected The sitting president, Mr T. D. Cuff, was re-elected, in spite of being challenged by the Canterbury N.Z.A.C.A. council delegate, Mr R. Carruthers. One successful Canterbury move was to have all cyclists at national trial events wear the colours of their centre.
Other championship allocations were: National hard track championships—Auckland (Okara Park, Whangarei) grass track—Wellington (Masterton); road 1967—West Coast—North Island.
