LOST LEAD EARLY

CHRISTCHURCH 18: T. McLintock, B. Tallott, T. Parker and D. Robinson tries; E. Bennett three goals. SYDENHAM 8: C. C. Preece and J. Tapara tries; A. Tuuta a goal. Sydenham held the lead only in the opening minutes after A. Tuuta had kicked a penalty goal. Thereafter, Christchurch dictated play to turn a half-time lead of 8-2 into a comfortable 10point win. Sydenham was extremely vulnerable on defence in the first spell and hesitant tackling allowed the Christchurch threequarters to score two tries E. Bennett, captained Christchurch with dogged determination and was easily its most rugged forward in the rucks. He made several productive barging breaks, as did T. Parker, P. Hughey, and B. Phillipson. At stand-off half, D. Robinson made two particularly impressive side-stepping runs. One of them culminated in a splendid try. Tuuta B. Barron, M. White, and J. Tapara were valiant forwards for Sydenham. In the backs, F. Clark and R. Raistrick thwarted several Christchurch movements with swift defensive play. Raistrick also made several incisive breaks, but frequently lost his supports. Referee: Mr K. Henry.
