Good Entries For Drama Festival
An evening of plays by Christchurch playwrights will be one of the features of the festival week to be held by the Christchurch and North Canterbury Area of the British Drama League from July 26 to 30. When entries for the festival closed on Friday, 19 plays had been entered. “This is a very good response, and, in fact, the second best we have ever had,” the area president (Mr H. Bell) said. “Altogether we have received eight plays by New Zealand playwrights. This is a record.” Mr Bell said that entries had come from Tinwald, Ashburton, Rangiora and Waikari. The 19 included plays by Wilde, Shaw and Synge. The festival in the Repertory Theatre, will be judged by Mrs Rosalie Carey. Among the trophies will be the jubilee trophy, awarded for the best performance of a play written by a New Zealand author.
