“New Pessimist”
“There ts a new brand of pessimist on the scene today," commented the president, Mr J. H. Rutherford, in his address to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Romney Sheep Breeden* Association. “I mean those who are advocating a major switch of emphasis in farming to beef production.
“I am not against increasing beef production—this we must do as a complementary and integral part of sheepfarming—but under no cir-
cumstances should we considered limiting the present growth of sheep and lamb production. **We have the most efficient sheep Industry in the world; we are the recognised world leaders in lamb production. Certainly the potential world demand for beef is greater than that for lamb or mutton, but Australia and Argentina will be back to the fore with greatly expanded beef production in a few short years —about the same few short years that it would take us tn gear ourselves for extensive beef production.”
