Good Inquiry For Ram Hoggets
All breeds of ram hoggets met a good inquiry at the sixteenth annual national ram hogget and registered ewe sale conducted by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., at the Addington Show Grounds. Border Leicester ram hoggets sold to 19gns, Romneys and Corriedales to 13gns, South Suffolks to 16igns, and South Dorset Downs to 16gns. A registered Romney ewe, offered by F. H. Chittock, of Lincoln, topped the market at 26gns. Border Leicester ewes met a brisk sale, unregistered mated ewes selling to 17gns. Registered ewe hoggets of the same breed sold at llgns.
There was little demand for unregistered Southdown hoggets and some of the Southdown and South Dorset Down ewes.
The sale was held in June this year instead of August, because it was found there were more inquiries during June for ram hoggets than there are in August. Also,
with stud breeders putting rams out earlier than in previous years, ewes offered in August are on the point of lambing. Vendors were, as a result, reluctant to offer them at this stage, and for the same reason purchasers did not regard August as the best time to buy.
