Port Labour Surplus

Only 283 men were engaged when work began at Lyttelton yesterday and 372 who were not required received attendance pay.

Two overseas vessels, the Turakina and Van Der Hagen, employed labour when they arrived yesterday morning. More men worked on the Norman, which arrived in the afternoon. A fourth overseas vessel, the Port Wyndham, arrived too late to begin cargo work.

Rough weather kept fishing boats in port all day.
