Birch And Willow Trees To Be Planted In Akaroa
In the last month a bridge in Robinson's Bay Valley road had been repaired and roads in the county had been graded and metalled as extensively as possible, the county engineer (Mr J. D. Annan) reported to the Akaroa County Council yesterday. On State highways water channels and culverts had received attention.
Two building permits, to a value of £5120, were issued during the month. Tree Planting
Birch and willow trees would be planted in reclaimed areas and reserves in Akaroa, and large partly-grown flowering trees would be planted around the recreation ground, the Akaroa County Town Committee had decided, the council was advised. It had also been decided that the large trees at “The Glen” would not be removed at present. Lighting Request
A Takamatua woman’s request for a street-light near her house was approved by the council.
At first most speakers opposed installing the light. The chairman (Mr G. P. A. de Latour) said that if the request was granted the council would soon get many more. He suggested the council might answer that it would investigate the whole matter
of street-lighting before the next estimates.
A start with street-lighting had to be made some time, Cr. C. D. Kay said. Costs were briefly discussed. Then Mr Annan said that if the council installed two lights in every built-up area in the couniy It still would not cost £lOO a year.
“In that case, I move we grant the request,” Cr. V. J. Armstrong said.
