The Chair of Sociology was left vacant by the death last year of Professor Morven S. Brown. The new Professor and Head of the School Is Dr. S. Encet, who wiCJ take up duty in November this year. Future plans for the School include sipeclai attention to teaching and research In the following areas: (a) The study of contemporary Australian social structure, with special reference to major areas of development since 1939; (b) Social change In Piapua-New Guinea as It approaches self-government; (c) Soclo-poltticail development In South-east Asia; and <d> The training of professional social workers. Other interests in the School include the sociology of medicine. in which the School is associated with the Faculty of Medicine. Funds are available for a research project into social factors in alcoholism, and support for other projects is currently being negotiated. The School has also been offered the co operation of various professional associations in carrying out studies of the changing structure of professional occupations.
