American Praises N.Z. Education

WELLINGTON, June 24.

New Zealand has one of the most advanced education systems in the world, the president of the institute of International Education, Dr. G. K. Holland, of New York, said in Wellington.

New Zealand students who went to the United States on sponsored programmes were most successful and were building a high reputation, he said. Dr. Holland is the 1966 combined insurance lecturer for Australia and New Zealand. He is a former permanent United States representative to U.N.E.S.C.O. in Paris.

The institute was purely administrative and was not a teaching body, he said. It was a non-profit organisation which sponsored student exchanges throughout the world. Albania, Bulgaria and China were the only countries which did not participate in the programmes. “Today there are 90,000 foreign students in 1800 institutions in the United States and 23,000 United States students studying abroad. “This year there are almost 300 New Zealand students in the United States. Seventyone are studying the physical and natural sciences, 26 are in the social sciences, 43 in

the humanities, 22 in the medical sciences, 19 in engineering, and 18 in education. “Ten years ago there were only 63. The number of American students in New Zealand has risen from three in 1960 to 26 this year,” Dr. Holland said.
