Directors of Broken Hill Proprietary announced today that to help to finance current expansion they intend offering to shareholders and debenture holders an issue of medium-long term Australian currency debentures. There will be no specific or transferable right and allotment will not be proportional to holdings. The issue may be made in September, but the amount and terms of the issue will be announced before then.

8.H.P.-Esso Exploration Inc. said this afternoon that “as yet no indications of oil have been found in the Esso Gippsland Shelf No. 5 well.” B.H.P. issued this statement in response to inquiries after the company’s shares had touched 630 on the stock exchange this morning—the highest price since 1962. Rumours of a fresh oil strike in Bass Strait were current on exchange before the statement was received.
