First N.Z.-Only Week Ends; Trend Steadier
At the end of the first week of trading in New Zealand shares only, the market had a steadier undertone at yesterday’s close. Rises just headed falls in lighter turn-over and a wider range, but key stocks showed a net advance.
National Insurance recovered 6d to 235, Alliance rose 3d to 10s 6d and United Empire Box ex Steele gained 2d to Ils 3d, but the old shares fell 3d to Ils. Motor Holdings at 14s 3d and N.Z. Newspapers, called as 10s shares for the first time, at 33s 6d each gained 3d. General Foods at 16s and Woolworths at 12s rose Id each and Wilson Cement rose 3d to 21s 9d in first ex dividend sales.
Prestige at 10s 3d and Consolidated Plastics at 27s 3d each lost 3d, South British fell a further 2d to 30s 4d and New Zealand Breweries at 13s lid, Fletcher at 18s lid, N.Z. Sea Products at Is 8d and Pye at 9s lOd each lost Id.
